Kappo Honda

I've been here at least once before, though the only record I can find at the moment is for 20100114. See Note: Log 20091215 to 20100131.

20121226:
I wrote: "Getting yakitori here at Kappo Honda. I initially decide on getting quail eggs and sausage with pork." 10:49PM PT
I wrote: "After seeing several orders of tomato and pork, I decided to order a serving also." 10:56PM PT
I wrote: "Oh my goodness, this chicken heart melted in my mouth or something. Soooo delicious. The pork cheek was good and fatty, but not nearly as delicious as the chicken heart. Huh, the asparagus and bacon tasted more like asparagus than bacon." 11:11PM PT

Quail eggs.

I wrote: "The quail eggs were okay. I like the quail eggs boiled in soup more than this grilled type of quail egg. Oh my goodness, the sausage of the sausage with pork is so juicy. Since it is one whole sausage, I thought it would be too hard to share, and so just proceeded to eat the entire thing." 11:17PM PT

Tomato and pork.

I wrote: "Oh wow. That chicken and shitake is delicious. The shitake is nice and chewy. Well the salt and pepper might be excessive. The tomato and pork was juicy, but it was also watery. It's not much different than the taste one might expect of a watery tomato. In any case, the tomato and pork was not as good as I was expecting. On a related note, the taste improved as the size of the tomato decreased." 11:34PM PT

Chicken heart (?)

I wrote: "The (chicken) kidney is tastier than the (chicken) liver. I thought the liver was too mushy to be tasty. I could be wrong. In any case, there was something that made the kidney tastier." 11:58PM PT

Chicken meatball.

I wrote: "The (chicken) meatball was juicy and sweet. It was delicious. I had one of the three meatballs, Josh had the other, and we let the others split the third. I find the meatball to be second best to the sausage." 20121227 12:09AM PT

Having sampled Stephanie's order of chicken heart, four of us (one of who was Steph) each ordered another serving of chicken heart.

Summary:
Gold: Chicken heart. | Silver: Sausage and pork. | Bronze: Chicken meatball. | Honorable Mentions: Chicken kidney, pork cheek, chicken and shitake.

Officially I ordered:
Quail eggs | Sausage with pork | Chicken meatball | Chicken heart

While the burger might have benefited from having cheese, I don't think this experience comes close to the experience I typically get from going to In-N-Out Burger. If my friends go again, I'd probably give the place a second try, but otherwise, I'd stick to In-N-Out or Fuji's Famous Burger.

Cham Sut Gol Korean BBQ Restaurant

Shrimp and chicken. Raw.

20121223:
I was not excited when my friends expressed interest in all-you-can-eat Korean BBQ. Whether due to the unhealthiness associated with stuffing myself, the cost effectiveness of such an outing, or my being sick, I did not have an appetite.

Informed that entree orders were available, I decided to come. However, en route I reasoned that even if I currently didn't feel like eating a lot, I would want to eat a lot when my friends were eating a lot. In the end, I decided to do the all-you-can-eat.

Shrimp and chicken. Done.

One downside we encountered was the lack of kalbi. This was unfortunate, because when I think of Korean BBQ, I think of kalbi.

I wrote: "I like the pork chop best. Perhaps then the chicken. Of the sides I like the steamed egg, then the rice paper, and then the potato salad. Back to the meats: I like the spicy beef, then the brisket is just okay for me." 3:51PM PT.

"[My three friends] seem to like the barbecue chicken most." 3:53PM PT. "Okay, actually I change my mind. The chicken is really good." 4:18PM PT. "The pork chop comes second to the chicken." 4:47PM PT.

There was a shrimp sampler which just tasted average. In the end, I'm uncertain what meats or sides each person favored, but Josh seemed to really like the brisket.

Meats. Raw.

For dessert, the establishment offers four flavors of ice cream: chocolate, pistachio, green tea, and a fourth colorful ice cream. I decided to just get two scoops of the pistachio flavor.

Viento y Agua Coffeehouse

20121222:
So there's this coffee place called Viento y Agua which my friend has been talking about since at least last summer, but for one reason or another, I haven't been able to go until today. Now obviously I couldn't go while I was attending school in Maryland, but I spent some time in California last summer and we never got around to visiting.

In any case, of the list of choices, I decided to try the Mexican Mocha. I got the size small with whole milk and whip cream on top. I was happy that whole milk was an option. When the drink came out, I was immediately stunned by the drink's presentation. Visually pleased, my taste buds were also excited and they were not disappointed.

I wrote: "Mexican Mocha is so sweet and tasty; I love it. Phuong's Green Tea Latte was pretty good, but I like mine more." 5:21PM PT

La Crêperie Café

20121220:
Today I got the jambalaya. It was good for what I could taste while sick. My dad got The Stallion and my sister got Au Bon Curry. I liked those too, but it was easier to detect the spiciness of the jambalaya one. In any case, we also split the Napolean.

Menu Description:
Jambalaya Andouille sausage, caramelized onions, tomatoes, jumbo shrimp, chicken breast and mozzarella cheese in a spicy Louisiana sauce 13.95

Menu Description:
The Stallion Savory crepe with Italian sausage, potatoes, scrambled eggs, mozzarella cheese, caramelized onions and basil 8.95

Menu Description:
Au Bon Curry Chicken breast, potatoes, cilantro and mozzarella cheese in a curry cream sauce with mango chutney and sour cream 12.95

The Napolean was delicious. I like strawberries and custard.

Menu Description:
Napoleon Fresh local strawberries, vanilla creme brulée custard and a caramelized crust 8.95

20121222:
Today I came back with five of my friends. While the main goal was to get sweet crepes, two of my friends split a Crepe Carbonara and I split an Al Mare three ways with the two of them.

This Al Mare is absolutely delicious! I love the taste of mushrooms and sun-dried tomatoes bursting in my mouth. My self-assigned third didn't have so much shrimp. Including the shrimp set on top, I had three shrimp. Note that the one on top has its tail on for presentation, but the shrimp inside have their tail removed.

Menu Description:
Al Mare Jumbo shrimp, sun-dried and plum tomatoes, wild mushrooms, shallots and mozzarella cheese in a lobster basil cream sauce 13.95

After the Al Mare, I had a taste of the Crepe Carbonara. I find the chicken too dry, the sauce too thin, and perhaps the bacon too crisp. I don't know. Maybe it's good, but I like the Al Mare more. 4:22PM PT

Menu Description:
Crepe Carbonara Chicken breast slices, mozzarella and smoked bacon in a creamy garlic parmesan sauce with pesto 11.95

I didn't have any of this, but Stephanie and Phuong seemed to finish it quickly enough.

Menu Description:
Chocolate, Chocolate Warm chocolate crepe filled with nutella and strawberries 8.95

Originally Michael and Josh were going to split this. But Michael got pretty far into it by the time Josh finished his portion of the savory crepes, so instead it became Michael's to consume and share bites. I found the banana to be just a little on the mushy side. The taste is mostly good. Perhaps the banana flavor was too strong.

Menu Description:
Martinique Bananas flambéed in dark rum with brown sugar in a warm crepe with French vanilla ice cream 8.95

After having tried Michael's Martinique, I started diving into my Crepe Tiramisu. The tiramisu was too soggy. But if you like tiramisu, then perhaps you'd enjoy this crepe anyways.

Menu Description:
Crepe Tiramisu Tiramisu wrapped inside of a warm crepe and topped with a scoop of ice cream and créme anglaise 8.95

While consuming my tiramisu, Stephanie cut a little sample of the Poire Belle Helene for me to try. The pear was good. I also like how the textural and slight contribution of the toasted almonds. 4:39PM PT

Menu Description:
Poire Belle Helene Pear, chocolate, toasted almonds and Frangelico in a crepe with French vanilla ice cream 8.95

Favorite Crepe: Al Mare.

Remark: In hindsight, it was a good idea I had the Crepe Tiramisu come out after the Al Mare, otherwise the ice cream would have certainly melted before I finished the Al Mare.

Tip: Have your dessert crepe come out after your entree. Of course, if you're only getting dessert, have it come out while others are having their entree.

Tip: Sharing is caring.

Irassae Sushi

20121221:
Today I came here with my family and we ordered the Albacore Special Roll, Irassae Roll, and Spider Roll.

Albacore Special Roll

Menu Description:
Albacore Special Roll Shrimp tempura and crab salad inside wrap with albacore and our with spicy ponzu sauce

Of the three, I liked the Albacore Special Roll best, the Irassae Roll second. and the Spider Roll third.

Irassae Roll

Menu Description:
Irassae Roll Shrimp tempura and crab salad inside wrap with eel, shrimp, and avocado on top

Unfortunately, the rice was too wet - perhaps with excess vinegar. In any case, my sister and dad did not enjoy their meal primarily for this reason.

Spider Roll

Menu Description:
Spider Roll Soft shell crap wrap with avocado on top glazed with eel sauce

I too thought it was an issue, but I was more upset about the clear presence of sesame seeds. I'll have to remember to get my sushi without sesame seeds in the future at any sushi place I attend.

Snow Station

20121220:
At first we got one large with mango and taro. Then we got a second large with green tea and passion fruit. With toppings the first cost about $9 and the second cost about $8. We were a party of 6, so the cost per person was about $3.

Green Tea (left) and Passion Fruit (right)

I wrote: "Mmm... mochi. Mango is the best. Maybe passion fruit is equal. I didn't like the green tea. The taro is good. Or possibly better than the mango. I don't know. It's all so delicious! The condensed milk is a must. In the future, I could just sneak in my own and just douse the dessert with it. :p" 10:29PM PT

Mango

20130104:
My sister and I came here after dinner with family and the line was fairly long. An employee started adding seats to the tables outside. Though I guess it was a Friday night and prime time for dessert. In any case, there are now three sizes available: Mini Bear, Baby Bear, and Hungry Bear. As my sister pointed out, this is silly, because the first adjective deals with size, the second adjective deals with age, and the third adjective deals with a state of hunger.

In any case, the only time you can get two flavors is on a Hungry Bear and having it there. As such, my sister and I got a Baby Bear mango with regular mochi, strawberries, and condensed milk and a Mini Bear milk with strawberries and condensed milk.

Milk

We didn't get that much condensed milk on the Mini Bear one, and the milk flavor just tastes strange without it. It has a dry powdery taste. Thankfully there was enough condensed milk in the Baby Bear to go around. I really like the mochi as a topping. Its nice and chewy.

Stoney River Steakhouse and Grill

20121213:
We came to the restaurant around 6:00.

My steak (20140530)

Steak medium rare. Seth's was medium and tasted better. Both were coffee cured. Mine was salty on the outside.

Lan's prime rib was also salty.

The au gratin potatoes were delicious. Mashed potatoes with grilled onions were also good. So delicious.

I was a little upset with the salty steak.

The appetizers were good, but I'd probably pass on them in the future.

My sister's plate (20140530)

[20121214]

20140530:
Tasty bread, delicious butter. Six pieces.

Coffee cured steak tasted salty at first, but had a delicious flavor.

My dad's Stoney River steak was good, and my sister's medallion was unfortunately cooked over and perhaps closer to medium than medium rare.

I didn't like the crab cake.

The sugar bits added to the sweet potatoes were tasty (probably brown sugar).

My sister's twice baked potato was good because of the cheese.

Bread (20140530)

The onion potato was alright. 4:06PM ET.

The best to worst was the sweet potato, cure coffee steak (had a distinct flavor), spinach, my dad's steak, twice baked potato is tied with the caramel onion potato, my sister's steak, and finally the crab cake. 4:26PM ET
