20160428:
Today my sister and I came here and we ordered the full rack of pork ribs with the blueberry cornbread and french fries.

In addition, I also ordered a single candied bacon.

Starting with the candied bacon, it was sweet and tasted like bacon covered in jam.

Next I bit some of the blueberry cornbread and it tasted a lot like a blueberry muffin.

In particular, it was moist and my sister noted that it was not mealy. They were really good.

Then, before getting to the ribs, I had some fries and they were good.

And last, but not least, the ribs were tender and the top half of them had a delicious coating.

Consequently, however, the ribs were half good and half plain.

My sister noted that she was able to get through the ribs by eating it along with all the other food items.

Overall, the ribs weren't bad, but they weren't amazing.

I'd say the highlights of the meal were the candied bacon and the blueberry cornbread. If I were to come back, I'd probably try the brisket. 7:38PM PT

On a different note, I had the Ballast Point Victory at Sea. However, in hindsight I shouldn't have gotten it, because it did not pair well with the ribs.

Blogger's Note: This is exactly the reason I often keep the receipt. With it, I recovered that the ribs were pork ribs and the beer was Ballast Point Victory at Sea.

Sancha Bar

20160426:
Stopping in Oakland to work before heading to the airport, I got a roasted milk tea and it tasted amazing. In particular, I was sure glad I got the large size because I was drinking it at an alarmingly fast rate. In terms of flavor, I was reminded of the matcha latte from Asha Tea House. 3:24PM PT

After finishing the milk tea, I got some (mild) popcorn chicken. Unfortunately, it was different than the popcorn chicken I usually eat and enjoy. Explicitly, it was more skinny, as opposed to round, and it didn't use basil leaves.

Overall, it was a nice place to do my work. While not all the tables had outlets, there were plenty of empty seats (on a Tuesday from 4 to 5:30 in the afternoon). 5:29PM PT

Today was my first time coming to Elephant Sushi and while there were a lot of choices, I quickly gravitated to the sea urchin special called Beastie Boys. Then, looking for something to complement a two-piece nigiri, I also got the Negi Hama.

Menu Description:
Ya Man Roll king salmon, avocado, scallion, fried red onion chips, pesto and ponzu sauce 12

I was offered a piece of the Ya Man Roll and it had an absolutely great taste. If I recall, I didn't dip it in soy sauce/wasabi.

Negi Hama

Menu Description:
White Out hamachi, avocado, topped with seared butter fish & garlic ponzu 15

I was also offered a piece of the White Out. Actually, I'm not sure if it was the White Out, but it had hamachi and the hamachi was delicious. Like the piece of the Ya Man Roll, I probably didn't use any soy sauce/wasabi.

Menu Description:
Negi Hama yellowtail with scallion 7

Unfortunately, the only roll pieces I could offer in return were from my Negi Hama, which was simple and not nearly as flavorful as either the Ya Man Roll or the White Out.

Menu Description:
Beastie Boys sea urchin, ankimo, quail egg & shiso, two piece nigiri 12

And last, but certainly not least, my mouth shouted with joy for the Beastie Boys. The saltiness and texture of the sea urchin combined with the yolk of the quail egg was just amazing. 7:41PM PT

Overall, I thought it was good. but it turned out more or less the way I expected. In addition to the gravy, which was placed on the side because we got it to go, we added syrup and it paired well with the gravy, chicken, and waffles.

Originally uncertain how the gravy would taste with the chicken and waffles, my friend thought the order turned out pretty good. 6:48PM PT

Cup-A-Joe Coffee House

20160423:
Having heard the coffee here was good, I dropped by to see if there were outlets for working. There were and overall I thought it was a nice space for getting work done.

To drink I had a house coffee single, poured into a ceramic mug, because the order was for here.

Taking it black as I do with most coffee, the coffee smelled great and tasted good as well.* 1:49PM PT

*For the time being, I can only discern with memory if a coffee is good or bad. In other words, in order for me to determine if a coffee from X is better/worse than a coffee from Y would require a (blind) taste test sitting.

Today I had Saigon Sandwich for the first time - having planned to go on two occasions and instead going to Turtle Tower and Gyro King.

In any case, the place was busy and a bit chaotic, because it was operating out of a small, tight space. Fortunately, the smells were delightful and the wait built a good appetite.

Having ordered two sandwiches, the roast pork (thit) and the fanci pork with pate (cha lua), I decided to start with the roast pork sandwich. It was juicy and automatically comes with one or two slices of jalapeno, but I heard several customers asking for extra. There's a wet mayo-based sauce at the bottom which added plenty of flavor. This sauce, furthermore, was not thick the way the mayo is in a sandwich from Banh Mi Che Cali.

Getting to the fanci pork, I was surprised by a strange, yet good tasting bbq-and-mayonnaise sauce.

Overall, there was an abundant amount of meat. As such, due to both quantity and quality, the sandwiches were worth their value (approximately four dollars, give or take fifty cents).

Banh Mi Cha Lua (Fanci Pork Sandwich) with Pate
It was a great experience.

Note that while I ordered two sandwiches today for tasting purposes, one would definitely be enough for me. 1:49PM PT

Truffle Sandwich (20160424)
Trying to think about what made it taste so good, I concluded that the tuna mix had a dominantly pepper smell and used a minimal amount of mayo; the flavor was simple and clean. 10:41PM PT

To drink I had the Ballast Point Longfin Lager. It was served in a mason jar.

Tuna Sandwich (20160422)
The sandwich was good but a bit unwieldy. In hindsight, I should have kept it wrapped enough to keep it held together. In any case, the sauce was delicious. In particular, I love whatever cheese was used (brie).

After finishing the sandwich, I noticed it had a nice, lasting aftertaste. At that time I also noted the texturetexture of the meat was good. filling.

*As far as I could tell, there was no hummus.
**While eating, I honestly noted that I couldn't tell which slices were lamb and which were beef. However, upon writing this post I realized the meat was a combination of lamb and beef (like a hot dog is a combination of beef and pork).

Sweet Lassi

The taste of the sweet lassi reminded me of the Vietnamese yogurt I had growing up. This drink, however, had a liquid consistency as opposed to yogurt.

Chicken Zafrani Biryani

Chicken Zafrani Biryani Tender chicken chunks and finest basmati rice flavored with saffron. 11

The chicken in the biryani was soft. Note, informed by the waiter, that the dish is already a bit spicy, we ordered it mild (mild + mild ~ medium).

Lamb Korma
Menu Description:
Lamb Korma Tender boneless lamb in Luckhwani style rich mild creamy nutty curry. 11

Like the chicken, the lamb in the lamb korma was also soft, but needed the sauce for a balanced taste. Note that this dish was not already spicy and we ordered it medium.

In both dishes, the amount of spiciness was perfect.

View near the windows (same as Uncle Chung's Szechuan)
Between the potato naan and the garlic naan, I liked the softness of the potato naan. Someone, however, who prefers crunchy foods would probably prefer the garlic naan for the texture alone. Both tasted good.

Overall, the food here was great and plentiful. There was a decent amount of food leftover (taken to-go) and I'm glad I didn't choose the buffet option.

I got the deviled eggs, blanquette de porc, and a glass of Ugni Blanc.

Menu Description:
Ugni Blanc Domaine de Pouy, Cotes de Gascogne 2014

I began with the wine. When the deviled eggs came out, I gave them a whiff and the salmon was the dominant smell.

Menu Description:
Deviled Eggs Smoked Salmon, Roe, Piparra Peppers, Cherry Tomatoes

Taking a bite, I immediately thought the eggs were amazing! In particular, I was inspired to put deviled eggs on my list of dishes to attempt cooking. Focusing on the various flavors, the pickled pepper seemed to play a have a significant contribution.

In contrast, the yolk mixture seemed relatively simple; it was somewhat creamy, but mostly tasted like a plain old egg. From what I could tell, there was no pepper. 7:47PM PT

Menu Description:
Blanquette De Porc Belly/Shoulder, Pearl Onion, Mushroom, Rice Pilaf

When the blanquette de porc arrived, I was taken in by the smell of the white sauce and began imagining how creamy it would taste. Perhaps, more appropriately, I would say it had a cheesy smell. Tasting the sauce alone, it had a bit of a kick and there were moments where the flavor tasted a bit salty. For the most part, the sauce was creamy with a subtle flavor of pork fat. 8:06PM PT

After the sauce, I took a bite of a vegetable which I identified as a brussel sprout. It was slightly bitter and didn't soak up much of the sauce. Regardless, it was still tasty.

Of course, and more importantly, the pork was super soft and delicious, but sometimes salty. Unfortunately, the pork rinds were too hard and I wish they were crunchy like chips. The pearl onion, an ingredient which I never noticed and/or eaten before, tasted good.

Overall, dinner here at Aquitaine might not have been worth the price, but the food itself was delicious.

One small mistake on my part was getting the sparkling water which cost more than half my glass of wine ($7 > $11/2). While it's imported from France, I thought in my head it'd be around three dollars. 8:26PM PT

Of the experience, I have several notes.

First, you must be over 21 to enter. Second, the lighting is dark, but the atmosphere is still good. Third, with an emphasis on beers, the place stocks a variety of glasses so that a given beer can be served in the appropriate glass.

Today I had Jolly Pumpkin Bière de Mars and Mikkeller Mexas Ranger.

Hops & Hominy

20160415:
Looking for a place with a good selection of beer and food, I found Hops & Hominy. Upon arriving, I was asked if I wanted to wait for seating in the main area or go ahead and get seated in the side area which had the same service except for wine and cocktails. Since there would still be beer, I opted for the latter. Note that aside from the immediate seating, the side room was much quieter and probably had a better waiter-to-customer ratio.

Before the food arrives, the restaurant serves a basket of cornbread which was so moist. While it was good without butter, the butter was light, not salty, and made a great addition to the cornbread.

Shrimp & Grits (20160415)

In any case, my entree - the shrimp and grits - arrived much sooner than I expected; I was surprised. Although I didn't think the dish contained any cheese, I couldn't help but describe it as cheesy.* Actually maybe it smelled eggy.**

Taking a couple of bites, I was delighted with the dish and was also surprised with the various chunks of ham. The ham added a nice texture and spiciness to the dish.

Despite what I remembered about grits being gritty, the grits in this dish were not.*** Furthermore, they tasted creamier than any grits I've eaten before.

On a slightly unrelated note, I liked how, for presentation purposes, there was one full head and one full body with the tail attached. 7:51PM PT

The shrimp and grits were delicious.

Cornbread (20160415)

As a group of three, my friends and I decided that getting the 3 Meat Combo would be the best idea. Then, by making assertive decisions and discussing choices of meats and sides, we arrived at ordering Hot Links, Beef Brisket, and Ribs for our 3 meats with Coleslaw and Mac 'N' Cheese for our 2 sides.

Gorilla Barbeque - takeout from a converted rail car!
In short, I thought the macaroni and cheese was okay with the cheese being a tad grainy, the coleslaw was good, and the cornbread was also good. Unfortunately, a single cornbread split among three people was not much cornbread to go around.

Eating the beans by themselves was nothing special, but the beans together with the provided barbecue* sauce tasted good.

Next up: the meats. The hot link was tasty and not too spicy. My friend Michael, however, didn't like the texture (a bit crumbly).

We drove to a nearby beachfront to enjoy our lunch.
The brisket was soft and good. I also noted that the sauce was tangy and a bit spicy, though I'm unsure if that's referring to the sauce used on the brisket or the barbecue sauce provided on the side. The rib had a variety of tastes and textures.

Overall, all the meats were good. However, I thought the brisket would be the best and saved my second brisket for last. In hindsight, the ribs were probably best. Interestingly, my friend Steph might have agreed with my initial thought (that the brisket was better than the ribs). 1:44PM PT

Caffe Macaroni

Caffe Macaroni

Squid Ink Pasta with Assorted Seafood

Relevant Links:
Caffe Macaroni Website
Caffe Macaroni - Financial District - San Francisco, CA (Yelp.com)

20160414:
While the lower level is small and crowded, there's some extra seating upstairs. Whether it was a weekday or simply later in the evening, the upper level still had plenty of open seats. However, on a packed night, one should expect to get friendly with strangers as the seats are almost shoulder to shoulder.

In any case, after looking through the menu I was going to get the linguine di mare (linguine pasta with mussels, clams, garlic, chili, and parsley), but the waiter subsequently suggested a special consisting of squid ink linguine pasta and an assortment of seafood. Having read some Yelp reviews prior to arriving, I had a good idea of what this dish might look and taste like, so I went ahead and accepted his suggestion. To go along with the entree, I went ahead and got a glass of pinot grigio.

My Description:
Amalfitano Black (squid ink) linguine with mussels, baby octopus,

Pinot Grigio

The mussel taste good and the baby octopus together with the sauce was amazing. The sauce, however, occasionally tasted salty.

Fortunately, the pinot grigio provides the perfect lightness to contrast with the stronger tasting seafood.

Moving along, I liked the clam more than the mussel, but both were good. Finally, at the center of the dish was the prawn which I saved for last. Unfortunately, it was underwhelming.

By the end of the dish, the dish's saltiness had managed to accumulate in my mouth, and yet tasted so good I continued to dip my pieces of bread in it. This eventually made me realize that the sauce and its saltiness was similar to a dish my dad occasionally cooks using fish and tomato. Upon making this realization, I wondered if the saltiness was thus a result of putting too much salt into the sauce or a natural saltiness imparted by seafood. 7:46PM PT

The wine was drinkable with a light spiciness that might have stemmed from the entree. There was definitely a time when I wasn't fond of white wines, but my delight with this pinot grigio would suggest such a time has passed.

Having finished my entree and wine, I decided to drink a dessert wine. Once again I asked for the waiter's recommendation and he described various options. After we exchanged a couple of sentences, he brought for me a glass of marsala. While enjoyed as a dessert wine for its sweetness, apparently marsala is also popular as a cooking wine.

In any case, it had a sweet swell which I could not pinpoint to any particular fruit or juice. I initially thought about grape juice, but then I thought it definitely didn't have the smell of grape juice. After a couple more sniffs, I thought it might be plum and proceeded to give the wine a sip. It had a delightful, sweet taste with a subtle alcoholic presence around the edges. In the end, it mostly tasted sweet like some sort of fruit juice, but like the smell I couldn't put my finger on what sort of fruit it might be.

After the marsala, I was planning on calling for the check, but the next thing I knew, the waiter and I were taking a shot of a what I vaguely heard to be limoncello. Without being sure of what I was drinking, I noted it had a lemon flavor, and was deliciously sweet, though not nearly as sweet as the marsala. Actually, the taste that lingered after I took the shot was as if I had just bit into a lemon, except without any sourness. In any case, I liked finishing the meal with it instead of the marsala, because it exuded a brighter, happier taste. 8:11PM PT

Marsala

Actually, I had enjoyed the shot so much that I just had to know what it was before leaving. He explained that it was limoncello made on site with vodka. He also elaborated, saying the mix was lighter than real limoncello because the state of California doesn't allow alcohol beyond a certain proof. He seemed to suggest that this wasn't the case in Nevada (but I don't want to pass on any legal/false information). Delighted to hear I was happy with the shot,** the waiter told me to wait for him to grab me another. Awesome!

Overall, I had a great experience at Caffe Macaroni, the upstairs had a great view, the outside seating is probably nice during warmer weather, and the waiter who served me was friendly (though I'm not sure I've met an Italian waiter who wasn't friendly).

*While I suspected the answer was white, I nevertheless asked the waiter what he would recommend as the appropriate wine to drink with the special. Confirming my suspicion, the waiter said any of the whites would go well. I wanted to note, however, that he did not go out of his way to suggest a white wine to a nearby customer who also ordered the same dish, instead letting the customer order a (red) sangria.

20160414:
I was working here with a friend when eventually I got hungry and ordered the chili con carne. It looked small when it came out but it was filling and delicious. It was hearty and would be perfect for a cold day. Of course it still tasted good, even though the weather today was sunny and beautiful.

Menu Description:
Chili Con Carne 8.5 w/beef, jalapeno, bell peppers, cheddar, tortilla.

I thought the use of tortillas was a nice touch, as opposed to supplying saltine crackers. I also liked how the bell peppers gave the chili a nice texture and the jalapenos gave the chili a little bit of spice. 4:18PM PT

Note that at the time of this visit, the establishment accepted cash only. 7:28PM PT That, however, is a minor drawback. I liked the coffee, there's a lot of seating, a variety of board games, great ambiance, free wi-fi, and good hours.

20160413:
Show Dogs looked like it had a good selection of food items, but I was more concerned with finding a place to pee.* Not seeing any restrooms, I was considering to go elsewhere, but I decided to wait in line to double-check. When I got to the front, the cashier said they did and that it was through the door to his right (customer's left). As such, I was satisfied and ordered a Smoked Wild Dog with a small side of fries.

Menu Description:
Smoked Wild Dog Merlot pached cherries, house dijon, arugula

After ordering, I proceeded to the restroom and apparently you need a key. In any case, after using the restroom, I settled down by one of the large windows.

When my order arrived I started with the fries. Without using any sauce, I observed they were well-seasoned.

About the size of a standard hot dog, the sausage was small compared to the bun and I had to be careful when chewing each bite to taste it.

In any case, the cherry sauce was good. It was sweet and its use reminded me of cranberry in a cranberry sandwich during Thanksgiving (or The Bobbie from Capriotti's).

After finishing the sausage, I proceeded to try the condiments. The ketchup had a lovely tang and it's thin compared to the average (Heinz) ketchup. The dijon was not overly spicy and also tasty. Last, but not least, the mustard was different from the average mustard, but I couldn't put my finger on how.

Overall, the sausage itself was okay, but the various sauces were great and I'm not sure if I would come back for any of the meats. I would, however, come by for fries and beer. Speaking of beer, after I finished my meal, I got a half pint of Harmonic Kolsch. 7:16PM

Turtle Tower

20160413:
The broth smells excellent. It smells fresh and more sweet than salty (that is, it smells like broth which I've had which tends to be sweet as opposed to that which I've had to be salty).

Menu Description:
Phở Bò Ðặc Biệt Combination of Rare Beef, Tripe, Well-done Beef Noodle Soup Small 7.75 Large 9.25

After smelling the broth, I proceeded to sip it and I was a bit surprised when I bit down on a little piece of ginger - awesome.

Moving on, the meats were delicious and I loved the thick noodle (twice the size of regular noodle and becoming a popular option at various pho restaurants).

After appreciating the meats and noodle, I returned to the taste of the broth. I liked how it left a fresh, clean feeling on the palate which I associate with using only fresh ingredients and no additives.

Overall, the bowl of pho was great and I would definitely come back for more.

Actually, I also liked the wide space of the restaurant, it's calming yellow walls, and the simple decor - some framed pictures are spread throughout the restaurant.

Oh, I also had some drip coffee which was good but it didn't taste strong. I was also surprised that for the amt of condensed milk in the cup that it was not so sweet. To me, that suggested the pho was actually quite sweet; the coffee finished dripping out after I finished my bowl of pho. In any case, the coffee was good and a nice way to complete my visit.

I should note that this a weekday where I arrived just before the peak lunch hour.

When I finished my meal at noon, all the tables except for a two-seater were full and a line was beginning to form. 12:00PM PT

20160417:
Originally I was planning to try a sandwich over at Saigon Sandwich but it was hot outside and I didn't want to wait in the sun. As such, despite coming here for the first time several days ago, I decided to dodge the sun from within Turtle Tower.

This time, however, I ordered the pho ap chao nuoc which I wanted to get the last time I came here. When it arrived, I gave it a whiff and mostly smelled the celery. The broth had a bit of an oily taste, but squeezing in the lemon eliminated the oily consistency.

Surprisingly, the noodle's width was the same as that of the pho noodles from last Wednesday - about twice the width of normal pho and about half the width of normal pan-fried noodles. In any case, I liked the smoky pan-fried flavor.

Menu Description:
Phở Bò Áp Chảo Nước Stir-fried Beef with Celery, Carrot, Onion, and Leek Pan-fried Noodle Soup Small 8.00 Large 9.50

It was interesting, because this was the first time I ever had pan-fried noodle soup. In fact, I probably wanted menu item #7 (pho bo xao) instead of menu item #6 (pho bo ap chao nuoc).

For me, I normally think of having pho ap cho (i.e., pan-fried noodle) either served don (crunchy) or mem (soft). To me, pho ap cho mem is most similar to drunken noodles at a Thai restaurant, whereas today's pho ap chao nuoc is a step beyond a bowl of rad na.

Unfortunately, a minor detail that bothered me was the lack of attention to my empty water cup. While it was close to closing time, I still felt entitled to either more than just a single refill of water because the restaurant was not at all busy. Had I known the refills would be infrequent, I would have asked for a bigger glass or a full pitcher of water.
