Burma Cafe

20170224:
This House Special Noodle tasted good. Ada liked it, too. It was neither too fatty nor too bland; it was all-around good.

Unfortunately, I reacted to either the split yellow pea powder* or the raw onion, possibly both.

Online Menu Description:
House Special Noodle (Nan Pya Dok) Flat wheat noodles with a mild coconut curry chicken sauce, eggs, split yellow pea powder and fried onion

The chicken biryarni was delicious 7:13PM PT

Menu Description:
Chicken Biriyani Braised chicken with Cardamom and Cinnamon rice, raisins, fried onion and almonds
Substitute chicken for 100% Australian lamb

*The term "split yellow pea powder" must have flown under my radar of foods not to eat. I am, however, aware that I have a strong dislike for peas, because they are a type of legume.

China Bee

20170219:
The tofu noodle had a strange texture.

The beef tendon was good. I enjoyed the texture of it.

The dumplings were spicy.

The stinky tofu tasted strange; the taste was reminiscent of cheese.

I thought the noodle would have too much sesame oil, but I was able to eat it.

The onion pancake was delicious.

I enjoyed eating the rice cakes.

The green bean pork was okay.

The chicken was delicious. 7:28PM PT

Kome Sushi Burrito

20170214:
I had a slice wrapped in seaweed paper. It was delicious, but that can easily be attributed to the imitation crab.

Johnny Doughnuts

20170214:
Ada and I got a strawberry donut. At first the donut seemed cold, but the rest of the donut was soft.

As for the sugar coating, it was lightly sweet. This was good, because I thought it would be overly sweet like cupcake frosting. 6:34PM PT

Señor Sisig

2017:
The Tosilig Burrito was delicious. It had meat similar to Chinese sausage inside - that was the highlight. It was flavorful. However, it left a greasy, oily feeling in my throat.

Online Menu Description:
Tosilog Burrito Filipino Sweet Pork, adobo garlic rice, fresh tomatoes and a fried egg. Served with a optional side of peppered vinegar.

In addition to the Tosilog Burrito, Ada and I ordered the Nacho Sisig with nacho cheese instead of real cheese. Ada said the chicken in it was too salty. 6:18PM PT

Online Menu Description:
Sisig Nachos (Choice of Pork, Chicken, or Tofu) Corn tortilla chips topped with nacho cheese, sour cream, guacamole, pico de gallo & pickled jalapeños

Kushi Tsuru

20170206:
This restaurant is located in the mall in Japantown. After getting sake, I looked at the different food options and decided to order the sashimi combination.

Sashimi combination

Menu Description:
Sashimi Combination (12 pieces of Sashimi - Tuna, Salmon, Hamachi, White Tuna) 18.95

While I was only able to identify the salmon (second from the left) and tuna (fourth from the left), I took notes on each pass through the sashimi platter going in order from left to right.

First pass (left to right): fish | not so fresh | no comment | solid

Ada's choices: salmon, vegetable tempura, and chicken katsu

Ada's friend Val shared a piece of her Korean bbq short rib (kalbi) and I found it overly chewy.

Second pass (left to right): okay | okay | uh... | better than the rest

Ada's chicken katsu had an overly crispy fried coating. Ada likes it better than the katsu they had yesterday.

Third pass (left to right): ok | good with wasabi | good doused in wasabi | tuna wins

Val's choices: shrimp tempura, kalbi, and salmon

Ada's baked salmon fish tasted dry. Meanwhile, the broccoli portion of the broccoli tempura was overcooked which made it mushy. And since I tend to enjoy my vegetables raw or partially cooked, this overcooked broccoli was absolutely disgusting.

Overall, I would say the service was good, but the food was just average: 3 out of 5 stars.

Tutti Frutti Frozen Yogurt

20140527:
In New York, after seeing the musical Chicago, my family and I had some frozen yogurt. I wrote the following: "[The] caramel is good. [The] Nutella tastes just like chocolate. Tutti fruitti [sic]." 10:58 PM ET

Remark: I was reviewing notes on 20200113 and came across this note. I couldn't find any pictures for it and so I had trouble figuring out which play we had went to. As I was wrapping up, I read over the note and suddenly the term "Tutti fruitti" resonated with me. After doing a quick Google search, I confirmed it was the name of a Frozen Yogurt chain. In hindsight, I should remember to look at the beginning and end of my notes-via-text more often, because usually the subject is there, if not submitted on its own in a subsequent text.

[20200113]

20170205:
Despite all my efforts to resist sweets, it's much easier on my own than with copious options being put in front of me.* In any case, I went into the store and asked for some sample cups. The worker gave me three and I can only recall two of the three sample flavors: dulce de leche (it was sweet) and mango.

Mango (left) and Original Tart (right)

Then, after my taste tests, I decided to get a little bit of original tart and a little bit of mango. Both were tart and not so sweet, which was good. Note that I initially wanted to add popping strawberries or popping mango but then figured they would overwhelm the flavor of the frozen yogurt.

I had a taste of my friend's taro and it initially tasted good, but it had a bad aftertaste.

*I feel sorry for kids whose parents overfeed/overfed them.

Chocatoo

20170205:
Ada got a triple chocolate mousse and I ate a couple of bites. I found the mousse was tasty and not overly sweet.

Online Description:
Triple Chocolate Mousse Fluffy white, milk, and dark chocolate come together atop an Oreo crust.

I opted not to take turns taking bites out of the dessert, but when Ada was done with it there was some deserted Oreo crust. Dutifully, I swooped in and consumed it (using a spoon).

*We initially pronounced the shop name as "co-ca-too" but eventually I pointed out the little bird feathers on the "c" and said it's probably "choc-uh-too" like the bird name Cockatoo. Apparently the name is in fact a combination of chocolate and Cockatoo and pronounced "choc-uh-too."
**I figure the entry which is both claimed and has the same address as the one on the website should be deemed the official entry while the other a duplicate.

Pizza Bocca Lupo

20170205:
Ada ordered the Pesto Pizza from Pizza Bocca Lupo. I had a slice and thought it was decent.

Menu Description:
Pesto Pizza Pesto, Cherry Tomatoes, Mozzarella, Parmesan Cheese. 12.99

Asking Ada (on 20170211) if she enjoyed it, she said "Not so. I guess I would have enjoyed it with tomato sauce. It was just nah!"

Konjoe Burger Bar

20170205:
After taking a short walk around the different stores, I was quick to decide I wanted a burger from Konjoe. However, since I wanted to get my food around the same time as Ada, I took my sweet time figuring out which burger to get.

The Konjoe burger looked good, but I had no idea what was contained in the konjoe sauce. So then my eyes turned to the Kalbi burger and that looked good except for the sesame mayo. So then I figured I would substitute it with the r.g.s.t. mayo, except I didn't know what r.g.s.t. stood for, so I asked the cashier and he told me.* So I ordered the Kalbi burger with r.g.s.t. mayo instead of sesame mayo and then added the fried egg (+$1) and roasted pork belly (+$3.25).

Kalbi Burger

Menu Description:
KALBI beef, lettuce, kalbi glaze, sesame mayo, kimchi cucumbers $10.50

The pork belly was crispy and delicious, though I had to eat a piece of it on its own in order to notice it. Meanwhile, the beef patty was juicy and I had trouble keeping my hands clean while eating the burger.

It's possible I was simply hungry, but I'll give Konjoe the benefit of the doubt and say the burger was deliciously good.

Konjoe Burger Bar Menu

Thinking about it now, I probably should have tried the Konjoe burger with shittake mushrooms. Oh well, next time!

*The cashier's response was enough for me to substitute the r.g.s.t. mayo for the sesame mayo, but I couldn't remember his answer so I sent them a message on 20170211 and I am waiting for a reply.

Cleo's Brazilian Steakhouse

20170204:
I got a plate of food from the salad bar.

From the Salad Bar

Top Sirloin: juicy in parts but dry in others.

Bacon Wrapped Chicken Breast (left) and Top Sirloin (right)

Bacon Wrapped Chicken: delicious

Round Steak (left) and Brisket (right)

Brisket: chewy.
Round Steak: slightly drier than the brisket, but still juicy; easier to bite and chew compared to the brisket.

Bacon Wrapped Top Sirloin

Bacon Wrapped Top Sirloin: not best thus far, but better than the brisket and round steak.

Lamb

Lamb: the seasoning was excellent.

Tri-tip with Garlic

Tri-tip with Garlic: ooo this one was excellent!!

New York Steak

New York Steak: as expected, the outer layer of this was .. actually, it's not bad; it tasted like a piece of jerky that's been salted with soy sauce and steak seasoning

Top Sirloin with Garlic

Top Sirloin with Garlic: oh my goodness, this one was even better than the tri-tip; it's beyond excellent!

Chicken Wings

Chicken Wings: I got a chicken wingette and a chicken drumette for myself, but held off on eating either.

Pork Sausage

Pork Sausage: I didn't like it

Top Sirloin

Top Sirloin: this cut was excellent; it's fatty; it's salty as well

Ready to drink some beer, I first drank some water and cleansed my palette. Meanwhile, I received another top sirloin with garlic followed by a regular slice of top sirloin.

Chicken Hearts (I was so excited I had already eaten the other two of five!!!)

But first, chicken hearts!!! I'm such a fan of chicken hearts that I asked for five. Though in hindsight I should have asked for even more!!!

Chicken Hearts: mmm, the hearts were tasty.

(2nd) Top Sirloin with Garlic

(2nd) Top Sirloin with Garlic: this time the garlic top sirloin was too done

One side of the (2nd) top sirloin...
And... the other side.

(2nd) Top Sirloin: in contrast, the second regular top sirloin was nice and medium rare

By now I gave away what remained of the uneaten brisket and round steak. I still have the remains of the New York steak, but I'll give that away too. I'll also reject this (2nd) garlic top sirloin. Oh, at some point I ate the drumette and I still have the wingette, but I'll probably eat that.

Pork Ribs

Pork Ribs: the ribs were not bad, however, they were salty.

Grilled Pineapple

Grilled Pineapple: this pineapple with cinnamon was excellent.

Fried Bananas: they gave us some near the beginning, but I didn't have any until we asked for more near the end; they were delicious (though I liked the grilled pineapple more)

Fried Bananas!

By the end of the evening, I had most of what they listed on the meat selection they have online (not bolded): picanha [pea-CAN-ya] (top sirloin) with traditional seasoning / garlic seasoning | New York steak | fraldinha [fral-DIN-ya] (flap steak) | peito (brisket) | tri-tip | sirloin wrapped w/ bacon | grilled pineapple | chicken hearts | chicken wings | chicken legs | cordeiro [cor-DAY-roo] (lamb) | linguiça [lin-GWEE-sa] (sausage) | top sirloin with garlic | lombo [LOM-bo] (pork loin) | pork ribs | chicken breast w/ bacon | eye of round

Max's Restaurant

20170203:
I loved the gising gising. The server said it would be spicy, but aside from the jalapenos providing a little heat, the dish isn't spicy. Even biting into one of the chili peppers wasn't that bad.

Gising Gising (Green Beans in Coconut Milk)

Menu Description:
Gising Gising (Green Beans in Coconut Milk) Spicy chopped green beans and ground pork simmered in coconut milk. 10.99

Meanwhile, the fish was good, but not great. In particular, it was not meaty.

Daing na Bangus (Boneless Marinated Milkfish)

Menu Description:
Daing na Bangus (Boneless Marinated Milkfish) White fish indigenous to the Phillippines, made flavorful in a vinegar-garlic marinade, deep fried, and served with our house relish and Vinegar Garlic Dip on the side. 14.99

I had a couple spoonfuls of the garlic rice and found it good. If I weren't watching my carb intake, I would certainly eat more. On a related note, Ada and I could have gotten away with ordering just a cup of it instead of a plate.

Garlic Rice

Menu Description:
Chopsuey (Sauteed Vegetables) Chinese inspired assorted vegetables with shrimp, pork and chicken sauteed in our savory sauce. A popular dish. 10.99

Finally, chop suey had a healthy amount of veggies, which was the reason I ordered it.

Chopsuey (Sauteed Vegetables)

Overall, the gising gising was the best dish, and I would recommend it.

Twisted Root Burger Co.

20170201:
When the man before me got to the cashier, the cashier remembered to change the second television screen from a menu displaying breakfast items to a menu displaying "Favorites" and "Salads."*

At that point, I immediately changed my previous menu choice to The Western.

Menu Description:
The Western Pepper jack, bacon, fried onion strings & jalapeno 10.66

The burger tasted amazing. It had a nice amount of heat from the jalapenos, whatever sauce it may have had was good, and the grilled onions were mildly sweet. The beef was also deliciously juicy.

As a note on how spicy the burger was, I noticed my nose was a little runny by the time I finished eating.

*First, the entire process of closing a picture file and then opening another picture file to display as a menu is slow, but it only happens once a day so I guess that's whatever. Second, is it that handy to display static information on a television screen? On the bright side, at least they're not implementing a dynamic menu, it's annoying when an establishment does that. How long do I have to wait again before I see information that's relevant to me?
