Patio Español Restaurant

20170728:
The soup the day, white bean soup with chorizo, was delicious. I could eat the white bean without any problems.

Calamares Fritos

Soup of the Day: White Bean

Ada's garlic soup had a good taste, as well. It tasted like onion soup, except with garlic instead of onion. It was both our first time ever having garlic soup.

Medium Rare Lamb (?) and Prawn

Rodizio Grill

20170716:
Today I ate here at Rodizio Grill (located inside Trolley Square on the second floor) with my fiancee Ada. Overall, I was unsatisfied with the quality of their meats.

The pictures generally reflect the order in which I received the food. Their captions will list the name as presented in the restaurant (when applicable), followed by the name as found on their online menu (when applicable). The comments generally reflect the moment when I was able to try a specific item.

Bananas Fritas
(1) Glazed Ham | Presunto

The glazed ham (1) tasted good; it was sweet.

(2) Garlic Steak | Bife Com Alho
(3) Pork Sausage | Linguica
(4) Some kind of fish

The fish (4) was okay. Ada liked it.

(5) Bacon-wrapped Jalapeno

The garlic steak (2) did not taste good. It was chewy and maybe cooked medium-well.

(6) Rib
(7) Center Cut | Miolo da Paleta
(8) Top Sirloin | Picanha

The bacon-wrapped Jalapeno (5) was delicious.

The rib (6) tasted good, the meat came right off the bone.

(9) Chicken Bake
(10) Bacon-Wrapped Chicken | Frango Com Bacon
(11) Tri-Tip | Maminha

The pork sausage (3) was not bad. Possibly a tad salty.

The seasoning of this center cut (7) tasted good, but the beef itself was dry.

The tri-tip (11) was delicious.

Unfortunately this chicken bake (9) was terribly dry.

At some point during this time I also acquired two pieces of pineapple (not pictured) and five chicken hearts (coracao, not pictured) came out. The chicken hearts were tough and dry, but since I love chicken hearts, I ate all five.

Next I tried the bacon-wrapped chicken (10). Like most other meats thus far, it was tough and dry.

(13) Center Cut | Miolo da Paleta
(14) Sweet and Spicy Chicken | Frango Agri-Doce
(15) Sweet and Spicy Rib

I still had some bacon-wrapped jalapeno (5) left and I finished it.

The first time I was given a slice of center cut beef (7) I couldn't catch what the server was saying. I even asked him to spell it and noted it as "cenicut." However, upon receiving this slice of center cut beef (13), I clearly processed the name as "center cut" and deduced the previous slice (7) as also being center cut beef. In any case, this slice (7) was tough.

(16) Top Sirloin | Picanha

The sweet and spicy chicken (14) was actually moist and tasty. I was surprised after all the dry pieces of meat I had been eating.

Finally, both slices of top sirloin (8, 16) were mediocre experiences.

At one point I was waiting for some lamb to come. Not seeing any come to our table, I asked a server if I could get some and he seemed to acknowledge my request. After some more waiting, I asked another server and he said that lamb was only served on certain holidays and that today there was none. On that note, their system with red and green works for most people, but sometimes displaying the type of meat desired would be helpful - especially for those with meat preferences.

(17a) Brazilian Caramel Flan | Pudim de Leite
(17b) Chocolate Cake

While I wasn't strictly on a low-carb diet, I was trying to avoid carbs as much as possible. Unfortunately, I also didn't want our prepaid dinner that included dessert to go to waste and so I ordered a Brazilian caramel flan (17a). It was thick and creamy - delicious! Meanwhile, Ada had some sort of chocolate cake (17b). I thought it was alright.

Zao Asian Cafe

Overview: Essentially an Asian version of Chipotle.

20170715:
I got a simple salad (lettuce) with chicken, curry sauce, carrots and dikon. It tasted great; I loved the spiciness.

In hindsight, I should have gotten double meat.

Note that I had a bite of chicken from Ada's bowl and I had a small reaction to the trace quantity of sesame oil contained in the guacamame, a guacamole and sesame blend.

Overall, the place has about as many options as Chipotle. One difference, however, is that Zao Asian Cafe's primary drink vendor (at least at this location) was Maine Root! Unfortunately, I have put myself back on a low-carb diet (except for beer) and just drank water.

If you ever wanted to eat at an Asian version of Chipotle, then this place is your chance to do it - provided you live in Utah.

Taqueria 27

Overview: My fiancee Ada and I came here and ate some tacos. We had all of ours lettuce wrapped instead of with tortillas. They were delicious. Each taco order comes with either two (small) or four (large) tacos.

20170715:

P.B.L.T.A.

Menu Description:
P.B.L.T.A. Taco Pork belly, lettuce, tomato, and avocado with jalapeno mayo in flour tortillas. $7.25

The pork tasted amazing.

Duck Confit

Menu Description:
Duck Confit Succulent duck with fire roasted veggies, chipotle crema, and crispy leeks. $6.50

The duck was moist and the topping was peculiar, but complimented the duck.

Fish of the Day

Menu Description:
Fresh Fish of the Day Taco (F.O.D.) T27 slaw, cilantro lime crema, fresh lime, grilled or fried. $7.00

Ada's (grilled) fish taco was good, but the pork and the duck were better.

Steak

Menu Description:
???

Finally, Ada's steak taco was good.

Some of the meat in my second pork taco was tougher to rip, but still good.

Tin Angel Cafe

20170714:
Ada decided to get the soup of the day, a tomato coconut cream curry. It was delicious. I couldn't pick up on the coconut (milk?) taste. It had a creamy texture. Overall, it had a delightfully light herbal taste that's common in tomato soups. 9:08PM MDT

Espresso Beef Tenderloin

For my main course I ordered the espresso beef tenderloin cooked medium rare. As a bonus, the dish was served with cauliflower, which was better fitting for a low-carb diet than mashed potatoes.

Menu Description:
Espresso Beef Tenderloin Center Cut Tenderloin* wrapped in Smoked Prosciutto, dusted with Espresso and seared. Served atop a bed of Cauliflower Mashers with Port Wine Demi Glace and Gorgonzola Picante 28.50

Special

Ada got the special, which was a fish dish, and we were also informed it was the last one available for the day. I later heard our waitress inform another table that the last special had been taken.

While I forgot to take notes (on the entree), I recall enjoying the tenderloin. In particular, I praised the meat for being soft and juicy.

For a moment when I received the dish, I had forgotten the side was cauliflower and was wondering why I would order a dish with mashed potatoes. It was then, however, that Ada noted the cauliflower and everything made sense again. In any case, if you've never tried it before, mashed cauliflower is an absolutely fabulous substitute for mashed potatoes.

Overall, I enjoyed both the food and service here at Tin Angel Cafe and would highly recommend it to others who are in the Utah area. Note that we were lucky and didn't need reservations, but their website recommends it, especially for days which are busy.

*I'm not sure what the original footnote here is. Probably a reference to a disclaimer about consuming raw foods.

Filipiniana's Delight

20170712:
The longaniza was delicious.

I ate the BBQ chicken (on a stick) cold and it was not as good as cold BBQ chicken from Fil-Am Cuisine. While I came during off-peak hours when the food wasn't as fresh, I still got the impression that the fresh/warm BBQ chicken from here would not be as good as fresh/warm BBQ chicken from Fil-Am.

Kona Grill

rainbow naruto

20170706:
Today my fiancee and I came here to have lunch with one of her friends. We started with a plate of calamari.

Menu Description:
rainbow naruto king crab & citrus aioli, tuna, whitefish, salmon, asparagus, sprouts, cucumber wrapper, tajin (chili lime spice), green onion, spicy yuzu ponzu 17.25

The rainbow naruto tasted delicious.

volcano

Menu Description:
volcano baked kanikama, whitefish, yamagobo, motoyaki sauce, sriracha, eel sauce 8.75

The volcano tasted okay. I was not fond of the may-based sauce (motoyaki sauce).

Menu Description:
voodoo roll spicy crawfish, avocado, tuna, habanero sauce, green onion, smelt roe 13.5

Wow, the voodoo roll's spiciness (habanero sauce) kicked in with a little delayed. Note that the spiciness wasn't overwhelming, but it's definitely there.

voodoo roll

When our waitress came by to ask about the food, I told her that I would have enjoyed the same spiciness in the rainbow naruto and she mentioned that would be technically possible, since the spiciness comes from the habanero sauce.

Menu Description:
fudge brownie vanilla bean ice cream, chocolate, caramel and vanilla cream sauce (contains egg)

For dessert we ordered the fudge brownie. While I personally would not have ordered dessert, there was so much brownie I didn't want it to go to waste and had a couple of bites. Actually, there was so much brownie that it would take anywhere from eight to twelve people to finish it, generally speaking.

fudge brownie

From a different point of view, the brownie outmatched the one scoop of ice cream by at least 3 to 1. That is to say that much brownie should be accompanied by three to four scoops of ice cream!

In any case, Ada thought the brownie tasted good and I would concur, because it was soft, moist, and crisp on top; the texture was just right. 6:42PM CT

Pho Hung Cuong

Overview: In addition to traditional Vietnamese cuisine, the restaurant has some Chinese cuisine and American cuisine as well. (@ 4788 NW Loop 410)

20170703:
The menu here at Pho Hung Cuong is different from most menus I've seen for pho restaurants in Orange County. First, there were less pho-centric options* and those listed were slightly different than what I've seen. Second, the last page in the menu is a list of purely American dishes.

Since "pho" was part of the restaurant's name, I decided to go ahead and order the Hung Cuong Pho Dac Biet (Hung Cuong Combo Pho) which contains beef, chicken, and shrimp ($12.50/bowl).

In the end, while I wouldn't find these ingredients in the same bowl at most Vietnamese restaurants in Orange County, the bowl of pho had a decent taste and would almost surely be satisfactory to anyone who wants to try pho. 6:53PM CT

*A Vietnamese restaurant in Orange County would list their main item at the first numbered item: "1." In contrast, this restaurant listed their special (Dac Biet) as "25." and third down the list in the Pho section.

Launderette

20170701:
Today my friends and I started off the day with brunch at Launderette. As a party of six, we had to wait a while, but there was seating outside and we enjoyed some drinks while we waited.

Fried Egg BLT

After being seated we ordered and somehow - with seemingly the easiest order (fried egg BLT) - my order managed to come long after everybody else's. In some sense this was fine because I was able to finish it at the same time as everybody else was finishing, but not fine because it made some people wait while I told them not to worry and so on.

Menu Description:
Fried Egg BLT avocado, pimento cheese, toast $12

In any case, I didn't take any notes but I recall enjoying it. With that being said, the prices felt expensive.
