Golden West Cafe

20120218:
This is my first time here at Golden West Cafe. I like how it has a decent choice of beer. There's also a (free) pinball machine near the back, past the bar. While you can avoid a long wait by coming early, you can always get a drink and play some pinball while you wait.

As of April 2013, they no longer have a pinball machine.

20120331:
For one reason or another, the notes on what I had to eat and/or drink here at Golden West Cafe are incomplete. If I were to take an educated guess, then I'm guessing I had the Ring of Fire Burger.

20130201:
Today I came and ordered a Tank 7 Farmhouse Ale. To eat I ordered a special called Super Bowl Steak Sandwich. By default, the steak is prepared medium rare, and that was delicious. As a preference, however, I would have liked a softer type of bread.

On a different note, the kitchen forgot to prepare a side of hashbrowns and when the server came I had asked for it. As proof that what I ordered came with a side of hashbrowns she took the sheet of paper with the list of specials. However, I had written notes on the two beers I had tried and she ran off before I could stop her. When she came back, I asked for the paper and she couldn't find it. She did supply me with a new sheet of paper. The moral of the story is "Don't ever let your server take your notes to the kitchen."

I can't seem to find any evidence as to what I ordered today, but it looks delicious.*

20130413:
Today I got sweet potato fries with cinnamon sugar and the chorizo burrito. I liked having the option of getting cinnamon sugar instead of salt, though the cinnamon sugar makes the fries more fit for dessert than as an appetizer. I enjoyed the chorizo burrito. It was tasty and I love the texture of the chorizo itself. I also tried a buffalo tofu. It was spongy.

Menu Description:
Sweet Potato Fries With rosemary salt -or- cinnamon sugar, yum! 6.75

I wrote the following (without knowledge of the above menu description): "Sweet potato fries with cinnamon sugar, yum!." 8:37PM ET

Menu Description:
Chorizo Burrito House made pork chorizo, potatoes, eggs, jack cheese, under chile sauce, salsa fresca 9.99 Sub soy chorizo 1.00

Prior to trying a buffalo tofu, I took a picture. Jordan's girlfriend Samantha looks at me and asks in a puzzled voice, "Did you just take a picture of our food?" To be clarify, she had offered me a piece several minutes earlier. Unfortunately, the picture turned out blurry and I have not included it here. Though the last time I checked, there is a picture up on the Golden West Cafe website.

I wrote the following: "BBQ burger. Cooked medium. With sweet potato fries. Caramelized onions, Jack cheese, and BBQ sauce." 7:14PM

20140305:
Today I got the Ring of Fire Burger along with a glass of B.W. Beer Works The Cask.

Menu Description:
Ring of Fire Burger Roasted jalapenos, house-made hot sauce & Jack cheese. 13.99

BBQ Burger (20140214)

20140606:
Today at Golden West Cafe I had buffalo sprouts, a wrap, and a Flying Dog Gonzo Imperial Porter.

Website Description: (as of 20200113)
Buffalo Sprouts (GF) (S) Lightly fried brussels sprouts tossed in a (S) buffalo sauce topped with bleu cheese crumbles. 8.99

The buffalo sprouts tasted slightly bitter. The bleu cheese made the dish tasty. I tried to move the sprouts around in the sauce for maximum taste. 7:36 PM ET

Jake's Steak Wrap (20140606)

Website Description:* (as of 20200113)
Jake's Steak Wrap (S) Grilled bistro filet cooked medium-rare with cheddar-jack cheese, mixed greens, sour cream and jalapeño pesto (S), wrapped in a flour tortilla. Served with a side of salsa fresca. 14.99

This wrap had a nice spiciness to it. Medium-rare is good.

*[20200113: This was the only wrap on the menu so I assume it must be the same one I ordered back on 20140606]

Potbelly Sandwich Shop

20120218:
So for the past three or so years, I would come back to California and one of my friends who travels a bunch for his work keeps asking if I've eaten at Potbelly. The first time he mentioned it, I told him I'll remember to check it out. Of course, I never did. Then I distinctly remember on two occasions, I was in the Inner Harbor ready to check the place out, but they were either closed or closing! The frustration. Today (20120218) was finally the day I got to try something from Potbelly. I'd have to say I was pleased with what I ordered. Given the choice, I'd choose Potbelly over Quiznos, and Quiznos over Subway.

The choice of Quiznos over Subway is mainly due to an overall impression I get when comparing the two over the many years that I've had subs from both places. Ultimately, personal preferences play a big role. Topping choices and expense are valid factors in such preferences. But this post is for Potbelly, so that's all I'll say about Quiznos and Subway.

I wrote: "Bread: MULTIGRAIN WHEAT BREAD. Size: BIGS. Meat: A WRECK. Toppings (Extra Cost): MUSHROOMS. Toppings (Free): LETTUCE, TOMATO, PICKLE. I like it."

Menu Description:
A WRECK Salami, roast beef, turkey & ham with Swiss cheese.

At the cash register, the cashier asked if I got any extra toppings. I said no and after sitting down I realized I got mushrooms. In this situation, I decided to go back and tell the cashier I got the mushrooms and pay the extra cost.

Blue Agave

20120211:
I first had a Mangorita.

I wrote the following: "The fried ice cream is good. From what I remember, it's better than the fried ice cream at Niwana." 9:04 PM ET

The manager on duty must have been having a terrible night (I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt), because there was a misunderstanding regarding the number of fried ice creams our table ordered and instead of being forgiving about it, he tried to insist on charging us. First, we might have been at fault, but from my point of view, one free lump of ice cream isn't going to hurt business. Potentially losing eight customers who enjoy drinking is worth so much more. Of course, I don't own a business, so maybe I have it all wrong.

Aside from the less than friendly service, I was told that I shouldn't come here for food.

Thai Arroy

20120211:
I wrote: "This drunken noodle with duck has a lot of flavor. And I'd say the spiciness is just mild or perhaps slightly above. Maybe the strong flavor is due to the addition of oyster sauce." 7:29 PM

My drunken noodle is pictured above. Two other dishes can be seen below.

Menu Description:
N3 Kee Mao** (Drunken Noodles) Flat rice noodles sautéed with fresh chili, garlic, Chinese broccoli, egg and fresh basil leaves. | Style : Original/Mild/Spicy/Extra Spicy

I recall liking my dish a lot. I also recall liking any other dishes I may have tasted.
