20130119:
My friends and I ran into bad service and three out of four of us weren't impressed with our entrees. While sometimes Yelp.com's average rating is wrong, in this case I'm willing to believe it has correctly converged to the appropriate rating. As of 20130121, Austin Grill rated an average of 2.43 over 116 reviews.
At first I ordered the barbacoa beef.
Menu Description:
BARBACOA BEEF Spicy pulled beef and peppers served with red rice and black beans. 12
But then I was given all these options for sauce. So it seemed like my burrito came prepared like this:
Menu Description:
GRILLED SKIRT STEAK Grilled skirt steak, black beans, ancho chile sauce and Monterey Jack & cheddar cheeses. Served with red rice. 12.5
I wrote: "The rice on the side is quite dry. The beef is also a little dry. There's not enough sauce. But the sauce tastes good, though a bit spicy. Chipotle Mexican Grill tastes better for half the price." 8:39PM ET
I also tried a bit of my friend's fajitas.
Menu Description (Fajitas):
Served with sizzling onions and peppers, Jack and cheddar cheeses, guacamole, sour cream, shredded lettuce, Pico de Gallo, beans, rice and flour tortillas.
Menu Description:
PORTOBELLO & GRILLED VEGGIE 13.5
I wrote: "The grilled cucumber and portobello were delicious." 8:58PM ET

Shin-Sen-Gumi Hakata Ramen
20130115:
I've come here once before. I had come with my friend Phuong. It was quite a while ago, and all I can remember was sitting on the ramen-only side next to the window.
Overall, I enjoyed this visit. Getting to the restaurant a little before 8PM on a Tuesday evening and being a small party of three, my friends and I didn't have to wait long.
Next time I'll get the spinach again, but not the kimchee. Also, getting the extra bowl of noodles was a bit excessive; splitting an extra bowl of noodles with someone would have been perfect.
If I came here again, I would try the "strong" strength of soup base instead of the "normal" strength of soup base and "normal" firmness of noodle instead of "soft" firmness of noodle.

Gyu-Kaku
20130115:
The food was good, but I wish there was an all-you-can-eat option. A friend of mine said they used to have the option, but eventually got rid of it. They do, however, have a 10 course meal option. Note that the option requires that each person in the party order from it.
Being our first visit, and in part since my mom is vegetarian, we opted to simply order from the a la carte menu. Of the different choices, we loved the kalbi ribs and the bistro harami and ordered them again.
Note: The meat in the center of the grill cooked faster than meat near the edges.

20130113:
I inhaled the smells coming from the bowl of pho and got a nice whiff of chicken. The chicken and chicken broth tasted fresh and pure. The broth was not at all salty and managed to taste delicious.
Unfortunately, the restaurant did not have any (unlaid) immature chicken egg; I think they just temporarily ran out. I love that in my bowl of chicken pho.
Fortunately, they did have fresh rice noodles, which has been a recurring request for me this Winter break.
I remember several breaks ago, the recurring request was for pho bo filet mignon (the meat slices are thin and come on a plate in order to avoid overcooking the meat), and years before there was the (family) trend to get a side of onion soaked in vinegar (hanh dam).

Note: When the bill came, the guacamole was a charge of $4.29. For what it's worth, that's an expensive side of guacamole.
I wrote: "So the initial smell is of grated cheese. But the taste dominates from the onions, melted cheese, and guacamole. The green bell peppers are thinly sliced and add less of a taste than the other ingredients." 12:32PM PT

Overall the carne asada fries were delicious, but not worth cost ($10.99).
The restaurant has a nice atmosphere, but probably a better place to visit during happy hour. Of course, all the indoor seating had finally filled as I was leaving, and so the place must be packed during happy hour and/or the evenings. I recall there being two or three televisions around the bar. Seats are pretty spread apart, but that might be why the place gets filled quickly.

Spicy City Chinese Restaurant
20130111:
My friends and I were at the San Diego Zoo and they told me about a Chinese restaurant they ate at and enjoyed. They were planning to go again and invited me along. I got the address from one of them and I also asked for the name. But all she had were the three Chinese characters and didn't have any American name to give me. In that situation, I double-checked the address and realized I had written down the wrong address. I was satisfied with what I was given and upon arriving, there were many Chinese restaurants, but I parked in front of the one with three Chinese characters, also named Spicy City.
When I called my friend, she had, in the time after leaving the San Diego Zoo, determined the name of the restaurant to be Spicy City. Thus, I successfully arrived at the correct location. In hindsight, if I was given the link with the image of the characters, as suggested by a friend of the friend, I would have been able to confirm if I had arrived at the right location without calling my friend.
The first shared dish was a frog dish. It was spicy and good.
The second shared dish was a vegetable dish. It was also good.
The third shared dish was the dish I chose and unfortunately it tasted a little burnt. The amount of garlic used also made it strong. I remember when the dish was first brought to the table and the smell just hit my nose from about two feet away. Thank goodness the smell doesn't linger.
I'm also glad I got the rice noodle soup. It was like getting a big bowl of rice. By the end of the day, we were a table of four and each person paid about $15 before tip. 6:55PM PT

So the entree comes out and looks amazing. There's this mound of food and sprig of sage sticking out the top. I first remove the sage and then check out what's under the fried chicken. I see in the center some mashed potatoes and off to the sides are English muffins with slices of tomato on top.
I wrote: "Oh my goodness, the bacon on top of the fried chicken with the thousand island dressing and/or tomato-based sauce is delicious." 8:00PM PT
Indeed this was true, but unfortunately, there was no Hollandaise sauce. My own attempt at eggs Benedict might not be perfect, or even great, but at least it has Hollandaise sauce: Cook 20100925 Eggs Benedict.
(Online) Menu Description:
Andy's sage fried chicken w/ fresh spinach, hardwood smoked bacon, market tomato, griddled mozzarella, chipotle cream and scrambled eggs.
I wrote: "Oh ok. The bacon is on top of the egg which is on top of the friend chicken. Some of the bacon is fried to a crisp. But most is nice and chewy. I like the bits of bell peppers. It's a little bland, but I suppose it should be eaten together with all the other, more salty foods. This entree could actually feed two or three people." 8:07PM PT

It's a small place where you order at the window and there's a bunch of seating outdoors. Its inconvenient on a rainy day like today. Thank goodness it was just lightly raining, so we were able to get the seats and tables wiped dry. There were plenty of umbrellas, though they seemed to dominantly serve as sun umbrellas.

Among the savory waffles I tried, I like the smoked salmon best. The fried chicken was good and I don't think I could have it without the honey. Note that honey costs extra, but comes in a nice little glass bottle. The fried chicken waffle reminds me of the Krispy Kreme chicken sandwiches available at the Orange County Fair (See OC Fair 2011 and/or OC Fair 2012). There was some weird sauce in my sister's turkey club that I didn't like. After coming home and looking at the ingredients, it might have been the pesto that triggered the unpleasant taste. This place eventually deserves a second visit. When I do, I'd like to have the burger waffle and/or the pastrami waffle.

Mandarin Restaurant
20130104:
I previously thought (on 20130106) that I had already eaten at Mandarin Restaurant. My friend, however, helped me determine (on 20130114) that I had not eaten here prior to this day (20130104). It turns out I had mistaken this restaurant for a restaurant named Fortune Cookies.
In any case, Mandarin Restaurant was a nice restaurant and I liked most of the food that we ordered.
I wrote: "The soup was alright." 1:27PM PT
I wrote: "The green-onion pancake was good. I ate it plain and would have liked it more with sweet and sour sauce."
While on the topic of the pancake, I have the following story:
I liked the salt and pepper pork chops best. They have just the right amount of saltiness and also have a nice crunchiness to them.
The pork chops were better than the walnut shrimp, which were better than the chicken fried rice, which were better than the sliced chicken with hot garlic sauce, which were better than the Mongolian beef. 1:40PM PT
While there may be many factors at hand, the fact of the matter is the pork chop dish was (of the five entree dishes) completely consumed first and the walnut shrimp dish was completely consumed second. The other three were practically tied for third, with me finishing the chicken friend rice, Ryan finishing the sliced chicken with hot garlic sauce, and Josh finishing the Mongolian beef. 2:00PM PT
As we shared everything, we each put in $10 plus one or two dollars for tip. Of course, a special thanks to anyone who might have been considering kung pao chicken/beef/shrimp, but changed their choice of entree to something that didn't contain peanuts (see Note: Food Allergies).
[20130114][20150815 Edit]
20150717:
Today I came to Mandarin Restaurant for the second time, but this time it was just the three of us (Josh, Ryan, and me).
While Josh asked if we wanted to order an appetizer, Ryan and I were satisfied with the egg noodle chips. They were, in fact, a perfect snack before the entrees arrived.
Speaking of entrees, we were each picking one, but there was a slight misunderstanding.
Somehow Ryan and I thought we, as a group, already came to a conclusion and went ahead and ordered. So when Josh lifted his head out of the menu, he was thoroughly confused and felt left out. We insisted he could order something else if he wanted, or just claim any one of the three dishes as having been ordered by him. Oops.
In any case, I found the honey walnut shrimp was nicely crunchy, the steak with black pepper was a bit soft and chewy, and both the chicken with hot garlic sauce and green onion pan cakes were tasty. 8:13PM PT
Of the four dishes, I liked the honey walnut shrimp best, the green onion pan cakes second best, and the chicken with hot garlic sauce came in at an easy third place, because soft and chewy steak is disgusting.
After we had finished, Josh and Ryan ordered a second helping of one of the dishes (I don't remember which).
While I might have been able to eat more, I've been practicing moderation and politely declined.

While on the topic of the pancake, I have the following story:
Five of us were sitting at the table: Chris, Kevin, Ryan, myself, and Josh. Chris grabbed a slice of the green-onion pancake, and then I took a slice. With one slice left, Josh asked how many slices were originally available and there was no real answer. Eventually Chris proposes that everyone is on their second, so Josh says good and takes the last slice, because he only had one.
Green onion pancake.
But if everybody had two, then each green-onion pancake was cut into five pieces. Of course, with no memory of how the pancake arrived, there was some joking about the pancake having been cut into five pieces and nothing more was said. However, in my head, I know two things. First, I only had two slices. Second, it's highly unlikely that each pancake was cut into five slices, because it is much quicker to cut a circular object into four, six, or eight pieces.
Salt and pepper pork chop. (Kevin)
Speculating on the size of the slices, I deduced that each pancake was cut into six slices (later confirmed by a photo I took) and thus either one person had four slices or two people had three slices. However, whoever did eat three or more slices didn't say a word. Of course, neither did I point out my observations. Why not? I don't remember. Perhaps the conversation had already moved on or perhaps I figured everybody seemed happy with having at least two.

Honey Glazed Walnut Shrimp (Tim) |
Somehow Ryan and I thought we, as a group, already came to a conclusion and went ahead and ordered. So when Josh lifted his head out of the menu, he was thoroughly confused and felt left out. We insisted he could order something else if he wanted, or just claim any one of the three dishes as having been ordered by him. Oops.

Steak with Black Pepper (Josh) |
In any case, I found the honey walnut shrimp was nicely crunchy, the steak with black pepper was a bit soft and chewy, and both the chicken with hot garlic sauce and green onion pan cakes were tasty. 8:13PM PT

Sliced Chicken w/ Hot Garlic Sauce (Ryan) |
Of the four dishes, I liked the honey walnut shrimp best, the green onion pan cakes second best, and the chicken with hot garlic sauce came in at an easy third place, because soft and chewy steak is disgusting.
After we had finished, Josh and Ryan ordered a second helping of one of the dishes (I don't remember which).

While I might have been able to eat more, I've been practicing moderation and politely declined.
